After a six year hiatus, Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak has burst back on the political scene in advance of the current elections. Within a short time, his nascent Democratic Israel party merged with the remnants of the once strong left-wing Meretz party (which currently maintains 4 seats in the Knesset) to form the Democratic Union. Stav Shafrir, who was until recently a rising star in the Labor Party, jumped ship to bolster the Democratic Union's ranks. The Democratic Union will attempt to build upon Barak's credentials to replace the Labor Party--which he once led--as the primary voice of the Israeli left-wing.
